carboNZero certified organisations have measured their organisations greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions so they understand what their impact is on the global climate. They then make a commitment to managing and reducing their GHG emissions by creating an emissions management and reduction plan. Any remaining emissions that the organisation cannot avoid are then offset by purchasing verified carbon credits.
The GHG emissions included in the organisations measurement include all Scope 1 (direct emissions e.g. company owned vehicles), Scope 2 (indirect emissions e.g. purchased electricity) and mandatory Scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions that are not directly under the organisations control e.g. employee business travel). Additional non-mandatory Scope 3 emissions are included depending on the results of screening tests and reference to programme guidance.
The organisation measurement focuses more on the business as a whole and does not extend significantly along the product supply chain.
Upon successful completion, certified organisations receive the carboNZero ‘certified organisation’ logo for marketing and promotional purposes.
Snowberry has achieved carboNZero certification for their products |
Organisations with carboNZero certified products have measured both their organisations GHG emissions and their products lifecycle GHG emissions, so they understand what their impact is on the global climate. They then make a commitment to managing and reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (products carbon footprint) by creating an emissions management and reduction plan. Any remaining unavoidable emissions are then offset by purchasing verified carbon credits.
A product measurement is based on a lifecycle measurement methodology. When you buy a carboNZero certified product it means that the product in your hand has zero net GHG emissions. What does that actually entail? It means the organisation that made the product has measured how much the product impacts on the environment in terms of its raw materials, production or manufacture, and transport to point of retail. For all emissions sources, the organisation has taken measures to manage and reduce and mitigate the net climate change impact to zero.
Or to explain even further, the organisation has measured all the embodied emissions in the ingredients and packaging that make up the product, the emissions involved in transporting the product, producing the product, and distributing the product to retailers.
Upon successful completion, organisations with certified products receive the carboNZero ‘certified product’ logo to place on their product labelling and packaging.

Organisations with carboNZero certified services have measured both their organisations GHG emissions and their services GHG emissions so they understand what their impact is on the global climate. They then make a commitment to manage and reduce their GHG emissions (services carbon footprint) by creating an emissions management and reduction plan. Any remaining unavoidable emissions are then offset by purchasing verified carbon credits.Upon successful completion, organisations with certified services receive the carboNZero ‘certified service’ logo to place on their service.
Events that bring many people together are a valuable opportunity for awareness-raising, learning and forming new relationships. But these same events also cause adverse environmental impacts (e.g. impacting energy, water, greenhouse gas emissions and waste). No matter the size of the event, there are clear business and environmental benefits to be gained by the attendees when you measure and reduces your impact on the environment. Joining the scheme provides you with access to guidance and tools that assist you to achieve your commitments and meet the requirements of carboNZero certification. Prior to certification, an external verification verifies that you have completed the measurement, reduction and offsetting steps.

Many individuals ask what they can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. Measuring your individual, household or travel emissions helps you to target your reduction efforts on your largest sources of emissions.

An estimate for the costs of carboNZero certification will be provided for your organisation once you complete a data table. Upon registration, your organisation will be provided with access to measure, manage and mitigate guidance and tools, via our password protected client pages, that help you prepare for verification. Upon certification, your organisation will receive a carboNZero certificate and the use of the carboNZero logo to promote your achievement. The measurement for products and services includes additional emissions consistent with the requirements of the new PAS 2050 standard for measuring the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of goods and services. Our advisors can help you to understand the difference between the standards for measuring organisations and products.
Full certification is not mandatory; some organisations may only want to achieve the following things:
