carboNZero certified small enterprises include:

carboNZero certified small enterprises have measured their GHG emissions through the use of an online calculator, prepared an emissions management plan and undergone a third-party verification to verify the information that they have entered is accurate. To complete certification small enterprises mitigated their GHG emissions through cancelling of carbon credits equal to the amount that was measured.

We set a realistic initial energy reduction of 5% per year over four years. Within our first year we have achieved a 22% reduction. While we are extremely satisfied with this result we will continue to strive for further reductions and to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, electricity used by our office and the introduction of our recycling project. The long term effect is to help the world however the shorter term effect has seen lower company overheads which is an immediate advantage to our company financially.

Celcius Coffee logoWe are a artisan coffee roasting company based in Lower Hutt, Wellington. We are fast developing a reputation as an exceptional coffee roaster who provides coffee with a social and environmental conscience. Our reputation has been heightened recently by triumphs at the New Zealand Coffee Awards and being named Regional Finalist in the 2008 Sustainable Business Awards and winner of the Hutt Business Excellence Sustainable Business Award for 2008. We are committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and this was evidenced when we reduced our emissions by 29% from our first year of participation in the carboNZero Programme. Our first involvement in the carboNZero programme started in 2007 when we became the first coffee company in New Zealand to participate in the programme. This year we are completing the small business certification programme. Our certification will start from 1 April 2008 and run through to 31 March 2009. Our main source of emissions are our business vehicles. They produced 71% of our total emissions. Last year we reduced our emissions by purchasing a smaller more economic vehicle. This year we may reduce the size of our vehicle again and report and monitor our petrol consumption identifying areas where we can further reduce. To offset any emissions we produce we authorise Landcare Research to source and cancel carbon credits from the regeneration of native forests.

FlareLighting and EnergyLight logoFlare Lighting and it's subsidiary Energy Light are a 100% NZ owned lighting wholesale and distribution business who as a company committed to reducing GHG emissions have developed an energy efficient light fitting for commercial use. This product gives substantial energy savings. Our goal is to lead the way with sound environmental practices with regards to our lighting solutions. By responsible design our lighting systems will reduce waste to landfill, save energy, reduce consumption of raw materials particularly copper, iron and steel  and most importantly reduce lead and mercury deposited into the environment. Our offices and warehouse have been fitted with lighting controls that measure daylight, reducing light levels as the natural light levels increase alongside controllers that are occupancy controlled eliminating the need to remember to "Switch Off". We already have these measures in place for our entire base year measurement period. We have based our measurement period from 1 April2008 to 31 March 2009 and have established this as our base year. We have identified that our main emission sources are shipping freight, business vehicles, electricity and air travel. Our annual emission is 54.34t. The main actions we are taking are recycling everything that is possible to recycle, turning off everything possible at night to reduce electricity use, purchasing more energy efficient motor vehicles, making every trip count including asking ourselves is the flight really necessary and creating a sustainable culture within the organisation. We intend to offset any unavoidable emissions by purchasing carbon credits through the carboNZero programme.

 

Freight on Board (NZ) Ltd

Freight on Board NZ Ltd logoFreight on Board (NZ) Ltd  is a 100% New Zealand owned Customs Broker and International Freight Forwarder. Although being based in Ellerslie, Auckland, we are able to handle consignments-import and export through any port in New Zealand. We can also handle your freight to or from any port in the world through our extensive network of agents. As a company that looks to the future, we see the importance of taking note of our emissions and doing what we can to reduce them for the generations ahead.  We have based our year from 1 January to 31 December and have established 2008 as our base year. Our sources of emissions are the fundamental business requirements of electricity and vehicles plus the unavoidable (in this industry) air travel emissions. Our  total GHG emissions for 2008 are 9.2 tonnes of CO2e. In order to reduce these emissions we are immediately introducing area  targeted call cycles for our sales team and controlling temperatures by way of thermostats and ensuring all computers are turned off when appropriate. For the year ended 31 December 2008, we have measured our emissions, put in place reduction initiatives and cancelled 10 carbon credits to become carbon neutral.

Lowndes Associates is currently assessing its supply chain and researching environmentally friendly suppliers.

PaintPlus Colour Systems Ltd

PaintPlus logoArchitectural coatings manufacturer PaintPlus has been committed to sustainable manufacturing from its inception in 1997. PaintPlus has been committed to eco-friendly practices since its inception. carboNZero certification was a natural next step after all PaintPlus products received Environmental Choice approval from the NZ Ecolabelling Trust. Embarking on a carbon emissions reduction programme is a logical extension to this commitment. The company measured all carbon emissions from 1 April 2007 to 30 April 2008. It was found that most of their greenhouse gas emissions came from shipping freight and business vehicle travel. PaintPlus has committed to reducing electricity and all fuel consumption by 5%, improve shipping efficiency by 10% and reducing waste to landfill by 50% over the next year. The company mitigated the full 48.8 tCO2e through purchasing and cancelling carbon credits. This high-quality manufacturer is the only paint company in the world that has achieved ecolabelling for all its products as well as carbon neutral certification for the company itself.

 

Peru Cafe Ltd

Peru Cafe logoPeru Café Ltd, trading mainly as Inca-Fe and Icoco, is committed to process and sell only certified organic coffee. The company is fully BioGro certified. The company is also the only roaster certified to import FairTrade coffee. Peru Café Ltd started roasting in earnest through their 100% subsidiary Inca-Fe in New Plymouth early 2007. In 2008 the established Icoco Coffee Company joined Peru Cafe. Peru Cafe operates as a family owned, large-capacity boutique coffee roaster using coffee sourced primarily from Peru, where the company has a large network of affiliates. The company's founders have a good understanding of coffee growing practices and an appreciation of the impact coffee growing can have on the often fragile ecosystems where it is cultivated. The company is determined to demonstrate that some of the best coffees are organic, that organic production in general is feasible on large scale; and that organic agriculture is truly sustainable in the long term. The company sees  that organic farming, being a lot more labour intense, could be an important source of employment in developing countries: employment in return for quality foods. The carboNZero certification is  considered  an integral element of our commitment to organics and supporting our goal  of achieving a truly sustainable business model. Our motto is where we have a choice to make things better at a little effort, lets do it. Inca-Fe currently offers private coffee connoisseurs the two flavours of Inca Gold (a sweet full-bodied blend with wine-toned fruit notes and dark chocolate) and Siesta (a lively complex blend with chocolate and raisin tones) available in filter or bean. Inca-Fe coffee can be purchased online, at locations such as New World and other New Zealand supermarkets, and leading cafes, restaurants, specialty organic and deli stores.

 

Project Litefoot Trust

Project Litefoot is led by seven high profile New Zealand athletes. Each of these 'Ambassadors' is undertaking a personal 'Rapid Revolution' in order to reduce their personal impact upon the environment. The initiatives taken are being recorded at www.projectlitefoot.org. Project Litefoot's ambition is to inspire other New Zealanders to follow Ambassadors' lead. Project Litefoot's estimated emissions from 01 April 2008 to 31 March 2009 is 18tonnes. This is predominantly from flying. As Project Litefoot is an initiative that is growing rapidly we will be unable to reduce the absolute value of emissions from flying. However we do plan to reduce intensity of emissions from flying by setting up our own cap and trade initiative amongst employees. Our ground transportation and electricity usage makes up a small proportion of our total emissions. Despite that we plan to reduce emissions intensity in these areas by 50% over the next 12 months.

- Encouraging walking, biking or taking public transport to work and providing safe facilities to store bikes.
- Reducing electricity usage by through closing down computers, turning off monitors and photocopiers.
- Reducing aeroplane journeys and using video conference calls instead.

We have then offset the remaining, unavoidable emissions by purchasing and cancelling credible carbon credits.

It holds a significant database of business owners gathered from these initiatives, who are proactive in growing their business. Our vision is to build a global business support brand to include a global database of proactive business owners by connecting business owners with sustainable business support. As part of our overall journey towards a sustainable business model, we have aimed to “measure”, “manage” and “mitigate” our greenhouse gas emissions across all of our initiatives. The carboNZero programme provides the framework for us to minimise our environmental impact. All emissions for the Business Expos were measured, including staff travel and exhibitor site transport. An extensive national communications campaign advises exhibitors and attendees as to how to manage their travel and transport to reduce their carbon emissions. We work closely with the Expos venues to ensure energy efficient systems are in place for the Expos. Expert speakers, mentors and services are available at the Expos to provide realistic steps for the attendee to integrate sustainable strategies into their normal business practices.

 

 

TaxiCharge New Zealand Ltd

TaxiCharge will support its partners by embracing the carboNZero Small Enterprise Certification programme. TaxiCharge produced 32 tonnes of GHG in 2007/08 where the main sources of GHG's are company vehicles and domestic air travel. TaxiCharge is committed to reducing its GHG emissions by 10% in the first year by replacing existing vehicles with hybrid vehicles.

Taking part in a carbon emissions reduction programme is the next step in our commitment. The Research Agency measured all carbon emissions from 1 April 2008 – 1 April 2009, and in doing so identified that domestic air travel, electricity usage and staff commuting are our main sources of emissions. With this in mind we have set goals of reducing our electricity consumption by 10%, reducing fuel consumption as a result of commuting by 5% and we will actively reduce air travel where possible.  We will also mitigate the full 12 tonne CO2e through purchasing and cancelling carbon credits.
