Certified organisations have undergone a third-party verification to verify that they have measured and reduced their greenhouse gas emissions and neutralised their remaining unavoidable emissions. To meet the requirements of the carboNZero programme, carbon credits used as offsets must be independently verified, additional, permanent and cancelled. The offset projects contribute to the reduction of New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions through native forest sinks, the generation of renewable energy and the recovery of landfill gas.
Suspended and withdrawn clients are separately listed.
Agility Logistics New Zealand Ltd
Agility Logistics New Zealand Ltd (Agility) is a subsidiary of Agility (International), which is a leading global provider of integrated logistics solutions. Agility (International) has more than 20,000 employees, with 450 offices in 100 countries around the world. Agility provides transportation and freight management services, collectively defined as their freight service in their emissions inventory. Agility offers their customers a personalised service and flexible solutions tailored to meet their individual business needs. Agility decided to become carbon neutral to reduce their organisation’s impact on the environment and respond to customers need. Potentially, this may in the future include measuring and off-setting freight emissions on behalf of their customers.
Antipodes Water
Since launching into 12 New Zealand restaurants at the end of 2003, Antipodes Water has grown considerably. It can now be found as the premium bottled water of choice in many restaurants, hotels and bars around the globe. Working with the carboNZero programme and being certified as carbon neutral has reinforced Antipodes' philosophies of looking for ways to do things differently and operate more efficiently. 'Whether using bottles made from recycled glass or reusing billboard skins as bags, we are continually looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment.' Antipodes has always kept its innovative philosophies at heart; this was reinforced when Simon Woolley and Antipodes Water received the 2007 New Zealand Restaurant Association Innovators Award for their work with the carboNZero programme. 'As demand for Antipodes Water grows in local and export markets, people are becoming more concerned about where their products are sourced from and the distance those items have travelled. We feel that working with the carboNZero programme not only allows us to widen our environmental management actions but also enables others to comfortably source a quality product from New Zealand knowing that Antipodes has reduced and mitigated its impacts on climate change.'
Cape Campbell Wines Ltd (trading as Brown Family Vineyards)
Brown Family Vineyards produces wine under a family of brands linked either through a coastal theme Cape Campbell (after the landmark lighthouse), Lobster Reef (after the rock lobsters that live along the Marlborough coastline) or to the local terroir with Cable Station Road named after the road next door to the Cable Station Road vineyard. The winery is family-owned and Murray and Daphne Brown are viticulture pioneers in Marlborough since 1980. In 1992 they established their own wine label with Cairnbrae in the heart of Rapaura Road area next door to Cloudy Bay. Murray and Daphne’s son Dion joined the business in 1994 and is now the General Manager. Following the sale of Cairnbrae in the late 1990s and with the pioneering spirit ever present, the Brown family bought 300 acres of land at Blind River in the southern Awatere valley in 2002.Today 80 hectares are planted in their Blind River vineyards with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir the key varieties. The Brown Family’s vineyards are planted in the Blind River area of Southern Marlborough. This area has ideal conditions for growing grapes, excellent soil, a warm climate and slightly undulating, north facing slopes. Within the vineyards there is a nine acre lake where local flora and fauna live, this lake supplies water to the vineyards as required. Brown Family Vineyards produce its wine according to the criteria of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ). Sustainability is the way of the future and the company is committed to producing quality wine with as minimal effect as possible on the environment. They believe that the more wineries that become carboNZeroCertTM certified, the more the wine industry can support each other toward a carbon neutral future.
Christchurch International Airport Ltd
Christchurch International Airport welcomed 5.5 million passengers in 2006/07, ranking as New Zealand’s second largest airport. The airport occupies a unique position economically, as the South Island’s biggest and most strategic air connection to the world’s trade and tourism markets. In addition, the airport plays an important role as the South Island’s major domestic hub enabling passengers to connect to a full spectrum of destinations throughout New Zealand. Christchurch International Airport is a major driver of the regional Canterbury economy, generating airport-precinct-related jobs for nearly 5000 people. CIAL is the first airport company in the Southern Hemisphere to attain certified carbon neutral status. Chief Executive Rene Bakx says CIAL sought out the best in the business to undertake the certification process. 'The involvement of world-renowned scientists at Landcare Research provides authority, credibility and integrity. Furthermore, the carboNZero programme is transparent, and has achieved international recognition. We are satisfied that the ethos underlying the programme is solid and international best practice.' CIAL has made a commitment to continue to reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions through identifying efficiencies and completing the external audit programme annually. The emissions that CIAL cannot reduce are offset through investment in government-approved carbon credit programmes in New Zealand. Mr Bakx says that CIAL will further extend this programme by working with airport campus operators to support them to become carbon neutral.

Contact Energy
Contact Energy is a large, dynamic company playing a pivotal role in New Zealand's economy. It generates around 25% of the country's electricity and is one of the country's largest wholesalers and retailers of natural gas. At Contact, we believe it’s important to measure and reduce our carbon footprint where possible. So we joined the carboNZero programme and we achieved carboNZero certification for our office operations initially in March 2007. In January 2010 we gained carboNZero certification for our office operations and CEMARS certification for our New Zealand operations (including our generation) – the first company in the world to hold both certifications simultaneously. We have undertaken a number of initiatives to reduce our office emissions over the years:
- Energy audits
- Switch-off campaigns
- Reducing our paper consumption and using more sustainable paper
- Purchasing low emission vehicles
- Significantly reducing waste from and increasing recycling at our sites
carboNZero certification has provided a methodology and framework for our internal efforts to reduce our impact on the environment.
Curious Ltd
Curious Ltd is a full-service production company representing some of the region’s most dynamic commercial directors, and servicing the world’s best. Curious is committed to producing world-class advertising campaigns, while delivering a production environment that’s professional, friendly, efficient and creative. New Zealand offers the world of film and TV a unique and unspoilt location environment. We at Curious recognise our part in a high impact industry and have drawn a clear line in the sand by making a commitment to sustainability. We are proud to demonstrate this commitment through our participation in the carboNZero programme which provides us with a genuine and robust method to measuring, reducing and mitigating our greenhouse gas emissions. Alongside our participation in the carboNZero programme we have developed a Sustainable Production Guide specific to Curious to enable our staff and contractors to help us reduce the impact of what we do. At Curious we are working hard to continue to attract productions to our shores while at the same time, knowing our environmental impact and taking steps to address it.
Digiweb
Digiweb was established over 10 years ago to provide a range of specialist data storage and management solutions for businesses throughout New Zealand. The company provides private server systems for a number of national companies and organisations, as well as web-hosting and e-commerce solutions for thousands of businesses. Digiweb’s move toward carboNZero certification was initiated by managing director, Brendan McNeill. Mr McNeill’s commitment was born of a personal desire to see his company operating in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. Leading the way Digiweb is the first datacenter in New Zealand to gain carboNZero certification. The company took the first step towards certification by identifying significant GHG emission sources and implementing a reduction plan, which set targets and specific actions to reduce those emissions. Electricity, diesel and long haul airfreight were identified as the highest sources of emissions for the company, and will be the focus of reduction efforts. Digiweb has already proven its commitment to reducing emissions, by switching to a carboNZero certified energy provider at the end of last year. The change of provider means that electricity used by Digiweb has already been offset; however Digiweb will still seek to reduce their use of electricity. Digiweb has also reduced its paper trail by changing the way it invoices its customers. Instead of posting invoices, customers now receive emailed versions – reducing the company’s printing and postage by over 90 percent. General Manager, Ian Falconer believes that “The strategies we have put in place will not only make our operation more efficient, they signify our commitment to maintaining sustainable practices.”
Dry River Wines Ltd
Dry River grows premium grapes in Martinborough from which wine is produced for domestic consumption plus a small proportion for export. We are convinced of the extreme problems posed by climate change including its short and long term impact on the wine industry and regard the need to take action as a practical, business and ethical imperative. The more the wider society sees individuals and business entities take action and participate in programmes such as the carboNZero programme, the more likely the remainder of that society will follow suit.
Emirates Wolgan Valley Spa &Resort
As Emirates Hotels & Resorts' first hospitality development outside Dubai, the A$125 million

With approximately 4,000 acres of land dedicated as a wildlife reserve, the Wolgan conservancy project re-establishes and secures a future for many of the region's indigenous and endangered species, which were under critical pressure from introduced flora and feral predators - the major cause of species extinction in Australia. InterfaceNZ
InterfaceNZ is very proud of our carboNZero certification.
InterfaceNZ are commercial carpet tile specialists,
sustainability is central to the philosophy and business objectives of our company, with a goal to become the first sustainable enterprise on earth. We call this Mission Zero.
But what is sustainability? For many people, sustainability translates into being "environmentally friendly", but it is broader than that. It represents much more than reducing waste, reducing emissions, protecting wildlife species and recycling. Sustainability is a process. A process to be efficient and sustainable in everything you do. Understanding and adopting sustainable business practices requires a new awareness of the world; the whole world, its natural systems and all of its species. It requires a deeper understanding of how the Earth works, and how man's processes affect nature's delicate balance. In essence you do well financially by doing good environmentally. This is not a cop out – it is a fact. Or put another way – you make a profit to stay in business. You are not in business to make a profit. We ask you to monitor how we are going and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Landcare Research. Their systems and ‘best in class’ knowledge is invaluable in helping us reach this goal.

Ian Miller, a director of the company, says achieving carboNZeroCertTM certification is an important milestone in their continuing efforts to operate in a sustainable manner in all areas of the company operations. “We share the concerns many have about the health and welfare of our planet and welcome the opportunity to demonstrate that we really care and are committed to making a positive contribution”.

We also see that it will further embed our culture of sustainability with our people and further enhance our commitment to the environmental sustainability of our operations. The certification process has enabled us to formally demonstrate how we are reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to put in place a robust reduction plan to try and reduce emissions where possible through all practical methods available. Apart from Endue’s and Snowberry’s enterprise and product carboNZero certification, an important part of the firm’s commitment to environmental sustainability is screening supplier firms’ environmental practices; using minimalistic and recyclable packaging; and operating a bio discovery plantation near Wellsford in Northland for the purpose of cultivating a variety of indigenous plants from which to source unique bio active ingredients for inclusion in the Snowberry products. The plantation will enable Endue to enhance its carbon emissions management through both offshore ingredient replacement and ultimately as an offsetting carbon sink.
Toyota NZ
Toyota has led the NZ market for 20 consecutive years; and this success which is underpinned by innovation, product and service quality, and environmental leadership. In 1992 Toyota published its Earth Charter and formally placed the environment as a top management priority. This led to the development of the Prius hybrid petrol-electric car and a range of other ‘green technologies’ which reduce a vehicle’s impact throughout its life cycle – from design and production, through to distribution, driving and eventual disposal. However, Toyota’s environmental efforts go much wider than this to encompass all operational activities, and how to contribute towards a more sustainable society. Measuring, managing and reducing the company’s carbon footprint is therefore a key responsibility. Toyota New Zealand was an early adopter of the carboNZero programme and is the first car company to achieve certification in New Zealand. Offsetting remaining carbon emissions by purchasing verified carbon credits is the final step of Toyota’s Greenhouse Gas emissions reduction strategy, which focuses on improving energy efficiency, reducing business travel, sourcing renewable power, raising staff and supplier awareness, and minimising waste to landfill.

Urgent Couriers
Urgent Couriers is one of the largest specialised on-demand courier
services in New Zealand. Having adopted sustainability as a guiding
philosophy in the late 1990s, Urgent Couriers published its first triple
bottom line report in 2001. 'Transport is a key sector for New Zealand's
response to climate change and couriers form a critical part of many
supply chains. As the first business in the transport sector to go
carbon neutral we wanted to set a standard we hope others will follow,'
says MD Steve Bonnici. The way Mr Bonnici sees it, being in a high
emissions industry doesn't mean putting it in the too-hard basket
because 'not further degrading the environment is really just a licence
to operate.' Urgent Couriers' entire operation - including all
contractors nationwide - is now carbon neutral. 'Once we had quantified
our emissions we focused very much on reducing our footprint within the
operations - increasing the number of low emissions vehicles in
operation and introducing smart, integrated GPS technology to improve
fleet efficiency, before we were ready to offset with credits.'
Wairau River Wines
Wairau River Wines takes its name from the beautiful braided river on whose banks Phil and Chris Rose planted their first vines in 1978. Pioneers in Marlborough, they have just completed their 30th vintage. With five children involved in the business and with five grand children, they have good reason to be looking towards a sustainable future. Phil Rose states that "Working on the land all my life I have always been aware of the environment and am conscious of our impact on it, respect for the environment is paramount in all decisions concerning the winery and vineyards. It is important to our family company to have the least impact possible on our surroundings, ensuring that the wonderful environment we live in is here for future generations to enjoy, allowing us to continue creating world class wines." Lindsay Parkinson - the company General Manager, who managed the process, is adamant that this is a significant step towards future sustainability and becoming carboNzero certified was an easy decision to make. "Managing and reducing our emissions makes us more accountable for our actions and we benefit from a financial perspective as well" he said. Wairau River Wines is in the unique position of controlling all parts of the winemaking process from vine to bottle, it has five estate vineyards in Marlborough totalling 500 acres, and a state-of-the-art winery and bottling facility along with a restaurant and cellar door.
Warren and Mahoney
In 2007 Warren and Mahoney celebrated becoming New Zealand's first architecture and interior design practice to achieve carboNZero certification. It was a natural step for Warren and Mahoney. For the past six years the national architecture practice, with offices in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Queenstown, has been steadily incorporating sustainability into its business. Warren and Mahoney pioneered an environmental protocol to encourage its clients to adopt more environmentally responsible designs. The practice has also engaged with several environmental pilot schemes and was an establishment partner of GreenBuild, a national building products database. Sustainable design forms the basis of much of Warren and Mahoney's recent work; it was an advisor to New Zealand's first two five-star Green Star rated buildings - Meridian Energy's new premises in Wellington and 80 Queen Street in Auckland. Also, Warren and Mahoney director Graeme Finlay is deputy chairman of the New Zealand Green Building Council. Becoming carbon neutral assures clients that the practice is committed to sustainability right to its core, as well as in the designs it develops for them. For Warren and Mahoney being carbon neutral has been the result of a series of small steps, from switching off lights and computers when not using them, introducing recycling and purchasing policies, and encouraging video conferencing in place of air travel, to envisaging a fleet of fuel-efficient cars. Moreover, the Christchurch office has retrofitted an efficient lighting system linked to daylight sensors and made the shift from diesel to bio-diesel to reduce carbon emissions from its heating systems. In the short term Warren and Mahoney is mitigating its carbon emissions by buying carbon credits. It's investing in a local scheme to regenerate native forest on retired farmland.

Yealands Estate Wines Ltd
Yealands Estate Wines Limited is based in the Awatere Valley, to the south east of Marlborough’s Wairau Plains. It is owned by Peter Yealands and his family. Its core activities as a company are the winemaking and distribution activities associated with its wine brands. Yealands Estate Wines Limited operates out of the Yealands Winery. This winery was built from scratch to target a 6 star standard in the Green Star NZ Industrial rating system. It is designed to handle some 11,000 tonnes of premium wine at full production, the majority of which will come off the vines of its sister company Yealands Estate Limited. The winery was built to excel in large-scale, high quality wine production without compromising the environment.
