carboNZero-certified events
2009 was a busy year for the carboNZeroCertTM programme with a number of events seeking carbon neutral certification. Eleven events have been certified carbon neutral, two of these were international - Kiwi Link North America held in Vancouver and Los Angeles and for the second year The Climate Change and Business Conference held in Melbourne.
This year we will continue to see a number of high profile events achieving carboNZero certification. For more information please refer to the profiles below.

Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2009
The Air New Zealand Wine Awards is the premier wine competition in New Zealand recognising excellence in winemaking. The competition has been around for close to 30 years now, and has long been regarded as the official competition of the New Zealand wine industry, as it is owned and organised by New Zealand Winegrowers. Each year over 1,700 New Zealand wines are judged by a team of 26 local and international judges to identify medal and trophy winners for each of the varietal categories. The Air New Zealand Wine Awards has had a sustainable focus for a number of years with a new ‘Pure’ range of medals and the Bell Gully Champion Sustainable Wine Trophy being included in the competition three years ago. 2009 is the first time the entire Awards programme has been granted carboNZero certification – from the entry process, right through to the judging and the awards dinner. Judging takes place at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland from 2-4 November, and this year’s Air New Zealand Wine Awards gala dinner will be held in Christchurch on Saturday November 21.
Liquorland 100 International Wine Competition 2009
The Liquorland Top 100 International Wine Competition delivers the most comprehensive range of wines commercially available on the New Zealand market. Now in its 16th year, the competition is the most established international show in the country. The judges, lead by chief judge Mike DeGaris include well-known, experienced names from New Zealand, Australia and the UK, including Melbourne-based wine writer, Ralph Kyte-Powell. The much-coveted Top 100 wines and trophies are announced at an exclusive awards dinner being held at the Auckland Museum on Friday 2nd October 2009. The promotion of all one hundred wines begins in Liquorland stores throughout the country on Monday October 5th.
5th Australia - New Zealand Climate Change and Business Conference
The 5th Australia-New Zealand Climate Change & Business Conference will be held in Melbourne on 24-26 August 2009 and will include an international exhibition. This not-for-profit event is hosted by The Climate Change & Business Centre and Point Carbon with the Victorian Government as Foundation Sponsor and both the Australian Federal and New Zealand Governments as Government Sponsors. The 2009 conference and exhibition will closely examine the themes: domestic and international policy developments in the lead-up to Copenhagen; financing the transition to a low carbon economy, including insights into carbon markets; impacts of the global recession on climate change policy and markets and practical advice on responding to climate change, including the opportunities. Over 80 expert speakers from the region and internationally will be presenting. For a sound understanding of policy and business developments around the climate change issue and insights from the leaders in the sector, this event is not to be missed.
New Zealand Wine Exporters Forum
At a time when economic uncertainty can undermine a company’s business platform, the New Zealand Wine Exporters’ Forum aims to provide an extra edge to small, medium and large exporting companies through access to a wealth of market information, insight and strategies. The Forum brings together speakers from New Zealand and from the key export markets of UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Europe and Asia. In doing so the Forum affords delegate’s access to latest market statistics and industry information that otherwise may not be easily accessible to individuals. It also offers practical workshop sessions and further networking opportunities. As an industry with a core focus on sustainability it was an obvious choice for New Zealand Winegrowers to look at minimising our environmental impacts. Minimising paper and material use by moving to online communication for pre event publicity and post event follow up as well as video link presentations are only a couple of the initiatives we have put in place to ensure a reduced effect on the environment. Included in the agenda is both a presentation on marketing sustainability and a practical workshop on sustainability from the bottle to the consumer.
Bizzone Business Expo 2009
Organised by Sarah Trotman Ltd, the Bizzone™ Business Expo, held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, is the largest business to business marketplace held for business owners and influencers, attracting over 13,000 attendees and more than 400 quality exhibitors. As part of their overall journey towards a sustainable business model, The Bizzone Business Expo will achieve carboNZero certification. Expert speakers, mentors and services are available at the Business Expos to provide realistic steps for attendees to integrate sustainable strategies into their normal business practices.
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Awards 2009
The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority(EECA) encourages, supports, and promotes energy efficiency, energy conservation, and the use of renewable sources of energy in New Zealand. The EECA Awards showcase everyday, innovative Kiwis across the country who are implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy projects that help their organisations to reduce costs, improve productivity and improve their brand credentials through lower greenhouse gas emissions. The 2009 Awards were held at Sky City Convention Centre, Auckland on May 21, 2009. The awards consisted of a cocktail function and prize giving ceremony. There were nine Category Awards and one Supreme Award. More information is available at www.eeca.govt.nz The EECA Awards 2007 were measured through the carboNZero participant event process (now disestablished).
Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2009
The Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2009 was convened by the New Zealand Climate Change Centre (NZCCC) and organised by Conferences and Events Ltd. The conference was held at the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington on 20 – 21 May 2009. This two-day conference included keynote speeches and presentations by leading international and New Zealand experts and researchers on climate change and adaptation, case-study based panel discussions, and input from end-users on their needs for information and tools. The NZCCC’s aim of the conference is to stimulate collaborative research by facilitating communication between scientists, planners, councils, engineers, businesses, Maori, and organisations dealing with climate change issues.
Climate change scenarios were presented to provide context for discussions about the potential impacts and required adaptation measures that New Zealand will have to adopt in coming decades.
Kiwilink North America 2009
Kiwi Link North America is an event organized and produced by Tourism New Zealand. The 2009 event was the eighth time that this event has been held in North America. It took place over three days each in Los Angeles and Vancouver and attracted over 300 delegates. This event offers New Zealand tourism suppliers a cost-effective and coordinated approach to training frontline sales staff from key airline, wholesale and retail travel companies, as well as dedicated time with Product Managers from key travel sellers of the South Pacific.
Seven Worlds Collide
The acclaimed Seven Worlds Collide project was first held in 2001. Over Christmas 2008 and New Year 2009, Music icons such as Neil Finn (Crowded House), Johnny Marr (formerly The Smiths), Phil Selway (Radiohead), Ed O'Brien (Radiohead), Sebastian Steinberg and Lisa Germano, along with Liam Finn, will record an album of brand new material in support of Oxfam. Other exciting guest contributers include members of Wilco, Don McGlashan and Bic Runga, with more guests expected to join the lineup over the next weeks. Seven Worlds Collide concerts will be held at The Power Station, Mt Eden, Auckland on January 5th, 6th and 7th from 7.30pm. Oxfam actively encourages everyone coming to the Seven Worlds Collide live shows to lessen our impact by taking public transport, walking, cycling or carpooling. Thanks for your help!
Ecotourism NZ Conference
Ecotourism NZ is making the 2008 conference carboNZero certified. There are a number of plans being put in place to minimise emissions. These include facilitating carpooling for delegates, reduce paper use and using recycled paper, using non-disposable cutlery and crockery for meals, offering teleconferencing facilities, collecting lanyards and name badges for re-use, among many other things. Carbon Credits will be purchased after the event to offset activities including attendee travel and accommodation, venue energy use, vehicle transport during the conference and paper use. A voluntary contribution to help us make the event carbon neutral can be made upon registration.
4th Australia-New Zealand Climate Change and Business Conference
The 4th Australia- New Zealand Climate Change & Business Conference will be held in Auckland, New Zealand on 18-20 August 2008, with both the New Zealand and Australian Federal Governments as Foundation Sponsors. The event will focus on the risks and opportunities facing businesses as a result of climate change with particular emphasis on emissions trading, in both compliance and voluntary markets. Some of the topics to be covered within the streams include:
- Voluntary Markets: how they can co-exist with compliance markets; some of the curly issues in determining your business footprint; marketing your climate change response.
- Compliance Markets: how to source carbon credits; the CDM market from various perspectives; linking the New Zealand and Australian schemes.
- Complementary Measures: what policies other than emissions trading are needed to drive energy efficiency; the perceived disconnect in listed markets regarding climate change; how to bridge the investment “death zone”.
- Land Use: competing needs for agricultural lands; reducing ruminant methane; soil carbon; avoided deforestation.
More than 90 expert speakers from this region and around the globe have been invitedincluding Prime Ministers Helen Clark and Kevin Rudd. The event has achieved carboNZero certification; it is a must for anyone involved in climate change strategy and policy planning and implementation. It is expected to be the pre-eminent business gathering on climate change in the region. This not-for-profit conference is being organised by a coalition of business groups, government agencies and NGOs from Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Europe.
New Zealand Organisation for Quality 'Learn-Share-Grow' Conference 2008
The New Zealand Organisation for Quality’s (NZOQ) inaugural ‘Learn-Share-Grow 2008 Conference’ is a must attend two-day event that will walk the talk on the subjects of business Quality, Productivity and Sustainability. It will also be NZOQ’s and Queenstown’s first ever ‘carboNZero’ certified conference. The last Quality event held in NZ was the World Quality Congress held in Wellington in 2006. It was run in partnership with the NZOQ and was a huge success attracting over 350 delegates. The aim of the Learn-Share-Grow conference is to help business leaders and quality professionals learn and implement sustainable business processes that ensure long-term viability and integrity of their business without compromising profitability. NZOQ is a national body formed in 1977 with its headquarters in Palmerston North and regional groups throughout the country. It is a member based non-profit organisation which provides training and education in quality standards for both its members and the industry as a whole.
Small Business Expo 2008
Organised by Sarah Trotman & Associates, the Small Business Expo is the largest event held for small-to-medium size business owners in New Zealand. Last year the event attracted 13,000 business people across Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. This year there are over 200 exhibitors, all under one roof for three days, providing quality products, services, free seminars, specialist advice and mentoring. You will get all the information you need to be a better business owner, make better business decisions and improve your productivity. As part of our overall journey towards a sustainable business model, we have aimed to measure, manage and mitigate our greenhouse gas emissions across all of our initiatives. The carboNZero programme provides the framework for us to minimise our environmental impact. All emissions for the Expos were measured, including staff travel and exhibitor site transport. An extensive national communications campaign advises exhibitors and attendees as to how to manage their travel and transport to reduce their carbon emissions. We work closely with the venues to ensure energy efficient systems are in place for the Expos. Expert speakers, mentors and services are available at the Expos to provide realistic steps for the attendee to integrate sustainable strategies into their normal business practices. We intend to offset the event’s carbon emissions by purchasing carbon credits from landfill gas and windpower projects, also native regeneration forestry projects. We believe the carboNZero programme will stand us in good stead for future-proofing our business and educating the small business sector.

Vero Excellence in Business Support Awards
The Vero Excellence in Business Support Awards 2008 recognise excellence in the field of business support, honouring those organisations that make real contributions in providing quality products and services to business. The Awards were created by and are organised by Sarah Trotman & Associates and are evaluated by the New Zealand Business Excellence Foundation. In 2008 the evaluation process includes assessing the organisation on their sustainable business practice. Through the carboNZero programme, we measured the distance and mode of attendees travel to the Awards Gala Dinner. Similarly, we measured travel to functions prior to the Awards evening. Our communications strategy includes advice to dinner attendees regarding their travel to and from the event. Sustainable event systems are in place for the Gala Dinner and include recycling, energy and waste management. Like the Small Business Expos, we intend to offset any unavoidable emissions by purchasing carbon credits through the carboNZero programme.
Ministry for the Environment/United Nations Environment Programme World Environment Day Core Event Celebrations
World Environment Day is observed annually in more than 100 countries, and is one of the most popular days on the United Nations calendar. This year Wellington is the nominated host city. World Environment Day is an opportunity to raise awareness and promote action on national environment issues. The theme for World Environment Day 2008 is climate change with a focus on moving towards a low carbon economy and lifestyle. “Kick the Habit” (the ‘carbon’ habit) is the international slogan for the event in recognition that climate change is becoming the defining issue of our era. The Ministry for the Environment is committed to encouraging, promoting and leading sustainable and low-carbon World Environment Day 2008 celebrations. As part of this commitment we have had the core UNEP/MfE World Environment Day events carboNZero certified. The Ministry is already working on a number of initiatives to improve its sustainability and to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions through programmes such as Govt 3 and the Carbon Neutral Public Service. Throughout World Environment Day celebrations the Ministry will be building on these actions. Actions to reduce emissions have included holding events at central venues within walking distance of guest’s hotels, using hybrid cars and taxis where possible and using video and phone conferencing in the lead-up to WED events for planning. We have ensured that there is recycling in place at WED events, minimised waste and packaging wherever possible, used 100 per cent recycled paper and vegetable inks for WED promotional material wherever possible, produced reusable eco-bags for our delegates and many other actions. We have also worked with accommodation, event and catering suppliers who have shown commitment and taken action on improving their own sustainability.

- Green Ribbon Awards 3 June
The Green Ribbon Awards recognise the outstanding contributions of individuals, organisations and businesses to sustaining, protecting and enhancing New Zealand’s environment. The awards are hosted annually by MfE and this year marks the 18th Green Ribbon Awards. The 2008 nomination categories reflect the many different areas in which New Zealanders contribute to reducing the impacts of climate change and assist us in becoming a sustainable nation.
The Ministry received 104 nominations. Individuals, iwi and hapu, organisations, and businesses were nominated in the following categories:
- Urban sustainability
- Sustainable land use
- Making a difference to household sustainability
- Community action for the environment – young people
- Community action for the environment – volunteers and not-for-profit organisations
- Businesses making a difference
- Innovative solutions for the environment
- Lifetime commitment to the environment
- Environment in the spotlight
Green Ribbon Award recipients will be acknowledged and celebrated at a special ceremony at the Wellington Town Hall on Tuesday 3 June 2008.
- Children’s Painting Competition Awards and Exhibition 30 May- 8 June 2008
During the week of World Environment Day an exhibition at Te Papa will display 64 of the international and regional paintings from the 2007/2008 International Children’s Painting Competition. The competition focussed on ‘Climate Change: actions we can take now to reduce our negative impact’ and attracted entries worldwide, including 49 entries from New Zealand. The children’s paintings depict actions to reduce climate change such as using renewable energy, introducing energy saving light bulbs at home, sharing vehicles, using public transport, and planting trees. The exhibition will be housed at Te Papa’s ‘Inspiration Station’ from Friday 6 June – Sunday 31 August and is free to all members of the public. The top global and regional winners have been invited to Wellington to receive their prizes at an award ceremony on Thursday 5 June. Awards include a cash prize of US$2,000 for the top global winner and US$1,000 for each of the regional winners. The awards ceremony for the winners will take place at Oceania, Te Papa and will involve Achim Steiner, Executive Director UNEP, invited guests and local school children. Short speeches will be presented by the exhibition partners and prizes will be awarded to the winners. Guests will have the opportunity to view the exhibition in small groups with an exhibition host. The International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment is organised annually by the United Nations Environment Programme, and the Japan-based Foundation for Global Peace and Environment, Bayer and Nikon Corporations. The competition has been held since 1991 and has received over 190,000 entries from children in over 100 countries.
- Environment Photography Exhibition 1-15 June 2008
This exhibition features approximately 22 arresting and extraordinary photographs and posters. The photographs are predominantly from the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) Focus on Your World photographic competitions on the environment, and make up one of the major World Environment Day events. Towards A Low Carbon Economy Photography exhibition is an outdoor exhibition at Waitangi Park and will be open 24 hours a day.
- Art for Environment Opening and Exhibition 5 June- 7 September 2008
Art for the Environment Exhibition – Moving Towards a Balanced Earth is an exhibition of works of art from 25 artists representing 17 countries. presented by the Ministry for the Environment in partnership with the Natural World Museum, the United Nations Environment programme and Te Papa, as a part of World Environment Day celebrations. Featuring works by Ralph Hotere and Bill Culbert, Mounir Fatmi, Bill Viola, and Susan Norrie. The exhibition is designed to utilise the universal language of art as a catalyst to unite people in action and thought, and to empower individuals, communities, and leaders to focus on environmental values across social, economic and political realms. The exhibited art will have an over-arching climate change theme. The exhibition will open to the public on World Environment Day, 5 June 2008, and run until 18 January 2009.
WA$TED! 2
WA$TED! 2 is the second series of TV3’s hit environmental series produced by Fumes. It was important for the producers for the programme to walk the talk. The WA$TED! production team tried to reduce their environmental impact wherever possible. The production was carboNZero certified. To achieve this, we measured our carbon footprint, minimised the carbon dioxide emissions that were created, and offset the remaining unavoidable emissions with the purchase of carbon credits. Some of the great things the production did to reduce environmental impacts, including emissions, included: carpooling, using a hybrid production vehicle, using reusable travel mugs, reusing props and buying second hand, supporting carbon neutral suppliers, recycling and composting office and location rubbish including DVDs and CDs, and buying recycled paper and toilet paper.
World Heritage Convention 2007
We were proud to announce that the 31st session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting was carbon neutral. This meeting was organised by the Department of Conservation on behalf of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. The 10-day meeting was attended by 700 participants and observers from the 183 State Parties to the World Heritage Convention. Through the Landcare Research carboNZero programme, we aimed to minimise the environmental impact of the meeting. The meeting was carboNZero certified: we measured all the emissions associated with the organisation, running and wind-up of the event including much of the delegate travel. We also put in place measures to minimise emissions during the event and offset the remaining unavoidable emissions by purchasing approved carbon credits through the carboNZero programme. New Zealand led the way for the World Heritage Committee by making it the first ever carbon neutral World Heritage meeting. The Committee commended New Zealand for making the meeting carbon neutral and stated that where feasible it would adopt a carbon neutral policy for all future sessions.
TRENZ 2007
TRENZ (Tourism Rendezvous New Zealand) is both New Zealand’s biggest annual international tourism business event and the country’s biggest carbon neutral event. It attracts about 350 international travel and tourism buyers from 28 countries, 50 international and New Zealand media representatives, and more than 400 tourism operators from every region of New Zealand. Emission sources measured for TRENZ 2007 included delegate travel, and energy and catering at the venue. Suppliers and delegates were encouraged to reduce waste, conserve energy and other resources, and offset carbon emissions. TRENZ 2007 was managed by the Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIA). TIA Chief Executive Fiona Luhrs says that making TRENZ 2007 carbon neutral aimed to show international delegates New Zealand’s commitment to good environmental management and to reflect the principles of the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015, which sets out a vision that the tourism sector will take a leading role in protecting and enhancing the environment.
Commonwealth Local Government Conference 2007
The Commonwealth Local Government Conference hosting 600 delegates was held in Auckland, 26-29 March 2007. The Department of Internal Affairs (on behalf of the New Zealand Government) worked in association with the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, Local Government New Zealand, Auckland City Council and other agencies to organise the Conference. The Conference was carboNZero certified. Measurements were made of the emissions associated with the planning and running of the event including international and domestic air travel, accommodation, venues and other activities associated with the conference. To offset emissions approved carbon credits were bought through the carboNZero programme.
