It can now be found as the premium bottled water of choice in many restaurants, hotels and bars around the globe. Working with the carboNZero programme and being certified as carbon neutral has reinforced Antipodes' philosophies of looking for ways to do things differently and operate more efficiently. 'Whether using bottles made from recycled glass or reusing billboard skins as bags, we are continually looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment.' Antipodes has always kept its innovative philosophies at heart; this was reinforced when Simon Woolley and Antipodes Water received the 2007 New Zealand Restaurant Association Innovators Award for their work with the carboNZero programme. 'As demand for Antipodes Water grows in local and export markets, people are becoming more concerned about where their products are sourced from and the distance those items have travelled. Chief Executive Jim Boult says CIAL sought out the best in the business to undertake the certification process. 'The involvement of world-renowned scientists at Landcare Research provides authority, credibility and integrity. Furthermore, the carboNZero programme is transparent, and has achieved international recognition. We are satisfied that the ethos underlying the programme is solid and international best practice.' Year after year CIAL has continued to monitor the company’s greenhouse gas emissions and identify areas where efficiencies can be made to reduce the emissions. The emissions that CIAL cannot reduce are offset through investment in government-approved carbon credit programmes.

www.dovepress.com
Dove Medical Press is a privately held company specialising in the publication of open access peer-reviewed journals across the broad spectrum of science, technology and especially medicine. The decision to go online-only and open access was made in late 2008, having been a print subscription based publisher since the company was formed in 2003. Not only was this a key business growth decision but it greatly enforced our desire to contribute in real terms towards climate change. In mid 2011 we engaged the services of the carboNZero programme, after a search for an internationally recognised certification (most of our clients are outside of NZ so it was vital to have international recognition.) We have senior management and staff buy-in to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, as we are all very much aware that even the seemingly little things like switching off our PCs and recycling (paper, toner, office milk bottles, etc) does make a real difference to our environment that we take for granted.
The original vineyard was planted in 1979 and has grown to 30 acres, producing wines that age and faithfully reflect where they are grown. Our fruit is drawn from three vineyards on the Martinborough terrace, Dry River, Craighall and Lovat, which are owned by the company. The vineyards are not irrigated and our goal is to produce the highest quality fruit in a sustainable and chemical-free environment. Nine staff members are employed to run and manage the vineyards, winery, dispatch and administration activities with contract workers hired in the vineyard as necessary. We are all committed to reducing our carbon emissions wherever it is practicable and we are enjoying the challenge.

Currently, Eco Tech and Eco Store have a joint partnership with 90% share holding by Eco Store and a 10% share holding by Tony Morpeth. Eco Store Limited however can trace its history from its establishment as a family business formed by Malcolm & Melanie Rands in 1987 as a means to support their philanthropic trust called The Fairground Foundation. During that time, the company started out as a mail order company run by Malcolm & Melanie. It wasn’t until 1993 that Ecostore began to manufacture their own products through Eco Tech Solutions Limited. Eco Tech Solutions Limited is strongly committed towards advocating sustainability and reducing its business’ impact to the environment. Our company had already strived to become certified for both the Enviromark (diamond) and ISO 14001 which implements an Environmental Management System in managing our plant’s operations in 2010. Securing a carboNZero program certification is just another step forward towards demonstrating that commitment.

First Direct is a taxi company established in 1990. It has been owned and operated by the Jackman family since 1992. It has a growing fleet of over 135 vehicles, including the largest fleet of wheelchair-accessible taxis in the South Island. The bulk of the fleet is owned by self-employed owner-operators who work under the umbrella and control of the company and pay a monthly subscription fee. The company owns around 25% of the fleet, including most of the wheelchair vehicles. First Direct provides taxi transport services for numerous clients in Christchurch including hotels, airlines, health providers, education providers, central and local government, and many other large and small businesses and organisations. The company is a member of the New Zealand Taxi Federation. Since 2007, carbon reduction has been a strong focus for the company and it has launched a number of sustainability initiatives. First Direct was the first Christchurch company to establish a hybrid fleet in 2007 and it has actively encouraged its members to switch to low-emission vehicles. The hybrid fleet currently makes up over 25% of the total car fleet. A maximum CO2 rating of 200 grams per km for all new and replacement cars entering the fleet was recently written into the company's vehicle policy. Education of drivers on environmental issues is an important part of First Direct's sustainability policy. The company has worked with the Sustainable Business Network's Greenfleet Programme on a Sustainable Driving course for small passenger service vehicle drivers that highlights issues around fossil fuel usage and demonstrates ways to reduce fuel consumption. Ongoing education at meetings and in newsletters has also raised awareness of environmental issues considerably in the company. Another initiative to reduce fuel consumption was a review in 2008 that resulted in a reconfiguration of First Direct's GPS dispatch system to change driver behaviour and reduce dead miles for operators travelling to pickup points.

Flare Lighting and its subsidiary Energy Light are a 100% NZ owned lighting wholesale and distribution business who as a company committed to reducing GHG emissions have developed an energy efficient light fitting for commercial use. This product gives substantial energy savings. Our goal is to lead the way with sound environmental practices with regards to our lighting solutions. By responsible design our lighting systems will reduce waste to landfill, save energy, reduce consumption of raw materials particularly copper, iron and steel and most importantly reduce lead and mercury deposited into the environment. Our offices and warehouse have been fitted with lighting controls that measure daylight, reducing light levels as the natural light levels increase alongside controllers that are occupancy controlled eliminating the need to remember to "Switch Off". We already have these measures in place for our entire base year measurement period. We have based our measurement period from 1 April2008 to 31 March 2009 and have established this as our base year. We have identified that our main emission sources are shipping freight, business vehicles, electricity and air travel. Our annual emission is 54.34t. The main actions we are taking are recycling everything that is possible to recycle, turning off everything possible at night to reduce electricity use, purchasing more energy efficient motor vehicles, making every trip count including asking ourselves is the flight really necessary and creating a sustainable culture within the organisation. We intend to offset any unavoidable emissions by purchasing carbon credits through the carboNZero programme.

The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony was established in 1993 as a secure breeding area on the North Otago Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. It is privately managed, and sits on heritage protected land owned by the local Waitaki District Council. Starting as a volunteer organization tasked with monitoring the breeding population, over the intervening 18 years the Colony has developed into a successful tourism operation. Goals revolve around maintaining the habitat in order to foster and cater for a growing penguin population, provide employment to the local community, return profits the WDC for community-based projects, and raise the environmental profile of the local tourism industry by leading the industry through gaining value and independent body accreditation. The Colony is the first penguin colony in the world to receive such accreditation.
To assist in the process the Colony has been monitoring specific social, cultural, and environmental key indicators for nearly a decade. Waste production, power consumption, community involvement, paper use, fuel consumption – all have been tracked. Management reports monthly on consumption numbers, and both Qualmark and Earthcheck accreditations are maintained.
Further, the Colony works closely with the Department of Conservation, the Historic Places Trust, other interested groups (i.e., Iwi and Trusts), and is an active participant in various advisory and international conference bodies. The Colony takes seriously the fundamental philosophy behind the Triple Bottom Line: environmental concerns are central to profitability. Strategic decisions have therefore been made to concentrate on enhancing our environmental performance and criteria as a driver for financial performance. Carbon neutrality is the final piece of our implementation.

Painters Inc. Limited is a medium sized painting and decorating company. Their core business is the interior and exterior preparation and painting of residential and small commercial premises. For exteriors this involves washing down the substrate to remove all dirt and mould and mildew, pulling away rusty nails, scraping and sanding paint and sometimes stripping the paint to bare timber. The substrates then need to be primed and top coated. For interior spaces, walls, ceilings and woodwork is washed or lightly sanded, new gib would be sealed and then top coated. Painting is a highly polluting business activity. There is a lot of waste generated such as sanding discs, maskings, plastic gloves, plastic film and blunt paint scrapers. Cleaning up brushes and rollers can potentially pollute the waterways if not handled correctly. Empty cans with left over paint could be sent to landfill. At Painters Inc. Ltd they recognise that their industry needs to make more effort to limit the damage as much as possible. They are a Resene Eco. Decorator which means they have a commitment to work as sustainably as possible. Painters Inc. Ltd recycle all cans and paint pails and left over paint through the Resene recycling programme and pay the fee up front so customers can take their left over paint to Resene to recycle without incurring any cost. As well as this they try and work as locally as possible to limit ravel/petrol usage. They also wish to implement a recycling programme for all waste in the next year and implement a more technically advanced system for cleaning brushes and rollers which will reduce their impact on the environment.

Architectural coatings manufacturer PaintPlus has been committed to sustainable manufacturing from its inception in 1997. PaintPlus has been committed to eco-friendly practices since its inception. carboNZero certification was a natural next step after all PaintPlus products received Environmental Choice approval from the NZ Ecolabelling Trust. Embarking on a carbon emissions reduction programme is a logical extension to this commitment. The company measured all carbon emissions from 1 April 2007 to 30 April 2008. It was found that most of their greenhouse gas emissions came from shipping freight and business vehicle travel. PaintPlus has committed to reducing electricity and all fuel consumption by 5%, improve shipping efficiency by 10% and reducing waste to landfill by 50% over the next year. The company mitigated the full 48.8 tCO2e through purchasing and cancelling carbon credits. This high-quality manufacturer is the only paint company in the world that has achieved ecolabelling for all its products as well as carbon neutral certification for the company itself.

The company is also the only roaster certified to import FairTrade coffee. Peru Café Ltd started roasting in earnest through their 100% subsidiary Inca-Fe in New Plymouth early 2007. Peru Cafe operates as a family owned, large-capacity boutique coffee roaster using coffee sourced primarily from Peru, where the company has a large network of affiliates. The company's founders have a good understanding of coffee growing practices and an appreciation of the impact coffee growing can have on the often fragile ecosystems where it is cultivated. The company is determined to demonstrate that some of the best coffees are organic, that organic production in general is feasible on large scale; and that organic agriculture is truly sustainable in the long term. The company sees that organic farming, being a lot more labour intense, could be an important source of employment in developing countries: employment in return for quality foods. The carboNZero certification is considered an integral element of our commitment to organics and supporting our goal of achieving a truly sustainable business model. Our motto is where we have a choice to make things better at a little effort, let's do it. Inca-Fe currently offers private coffee connoisseurs the two flavours of Inca Gold (a sweet full-bodied blend with wine-toned fruit notes and dark chocolate) and Siesta (a lively complex blend with chocolate and raisin tones) available in filter or bean. Urgent Couriers is one of the largest specialised on-demand courier services in New Zealand. Having adopted sustainability as a guiding philosophy in the late 1990s, Urgent Couriers published its first triple bottom line report in 2001. 'Transport is a key sector for New Zealand's response to climate change and couriers form a critical part of many supply chains. As the first business in the transport sector to go carbon neutral we wanted to set a standard we hope others will follow,' says MD Steve Bonnici. The way Mr Bonnici sees it, being in a high emissions industry doesn't mean putting it in the too-hard basket because 'not further degrading the environment is really just a licence to operate.' Urgent Couriers' entire operation - including all contractors nationwide - is now carbon neutral. 'Once we had quantified our emissions we focused very much on reducing our footprint within the operations - increasing the number of low emissions vehicles in operation and introducing smart, integrated GPS technology to improve fleet efficiency, before we were ready to offset with credits.'

Pioneers in Marlborough, they have just completed their 30th vintage. With five children involved in the business and with five grand children, they have good reason to be looking towards a sustainable future. Phil Rose states that "Working on the land all my life I have always been aware of the environment and am conscious of our impact on it, respect for the environment is paramount in all decisions concerning the winery and vineyards. It is important to our family company to have the least impact possible on our surroundings, ensuring that the wonderful environment we live in is here for future generations to enjoy, allowing us to continue creating world class wines." Lindsay Parkinson - the company General Manager, who managed the process, is adamant that this is a significant step towards future sustainability and becoming carboNzero certified was an easy decision to make. "Managing and reducing our emissions makes us more accountable for our actions and we benefit from a financial perspective as well" he said. Wairau River Wines is in the unique position of controlling all parts of the winemaking process from vine to bottle, it has five estate vineyards in Marlborough totalling 500 acres, and a state-of-the-art winery and bottling facility along with a restaurant and cellar door.

In 2007 Warren and Mahoney celebrated becoming New Zealand's first architecture and interior design practice to achieve carboNZero certification. It was a natural step for Warren and Mahoney. For the past six years the national architecture practice, with offices in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Queenstown, has been steadily incorporating sustainability into its business. Warren and Mahoney pioneered an environmental protocol to encourage its clients to adopt more environmentally responsible designs. The practice has also engaged with several environmental pilot schemes and was an establishment partner of GreenBuild, a national building products database. Sustainable design forms the basis of much of Warren and Mahoney's recent work; it was an advisor to New Zealand's first two five-star Green Star rated buildings - Meridian Energy's new premises in Wellington and 80 Queen Street in Auckland. Also, Warren and Mahoney director Graeme Finlay is deputy chairman of the New Zealand Green Building Council. Becoming carbon neutral assures clients that the practice is committed to sustainability right to its core, as well as in the designs it develops for them. For Warren and Mahoney being carbon neutral has been the result of a series of small steps, from switching off lights and computers when not using them, introducing recycling and purchasing policies, and encouraging video conferencing in place of air travel, to envisaging a fleet of fuel-efficient cars. Moreover, the Christchurch office has retrofitted an efficient lighting system linked to daylight sensors and made the shift from diesel to bio-diesel to reduce carbon emissions from its heating systems. In the short term Warren and Mahoney is mitigating its carbon emissions by buying carbon credits. It's investing in a local scheme to regenerate native forest on retired farmland.
