Furthermore, the carboNZero programme is transparent, and has achieved international recognition. We are satisfied that the ethos underlying the programme is solid and international best practice.' CIAL has made a commitment to continue to reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions through identifying efficiencies and completing the external audit programme annually. The emissions that CIAL cannot reduce are offset through investment in government-approved carbon credit programmes in New Zealand. Mr Bakx says that CIAL will further extend this programme by working with airport campus operators to support them to become carbon neutral.

www.dovepress.com

Dove Medical Press (New Zealand) Limited

DovelogoDove Medical Press is a privately held company specialising in the publication of open access peer-reviewed journals across the broad spectrum of science, technology and especially medicine. The decision to go online-only and open access was made in late 2008, having been a print subscription based publisher since the company was formed in 2003. Not only was this a key business growth decision but it greatly enforced our desire to contribute in real terms towards climate change. In mid 2011 we engaged the services of the carboNZero programme, after a search for an internationally recognised certification (most of our clients are outside of NZ so it was vital to have international recognition.) We have senior management and staff buy-in to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, as we are all very much aware that even the seemingly little things like switching off our PCs and recycling (paper, toner, office milk bottles, etc) does make a real difference to our environment that we take for granted.

www.ebode.co.nz

ebode Limited

ebode logoebode provides architecturally designed and built passive solar homes for New Zealanders who want to live sustainably while still enjoying the richness of everything that life has to offer. Founded, developed and run by designers who truly walk the talk when it comes to sustainable living, every part of an ebode – from the design to the construction materials and finishes – is carefully scrutinized to ensure that it measures up to ebode’s own high standards before we think it is good enough for our clients. As a company we operate out of a passive solar designed office which generates its own solar power and hot water, collects its own rain water and composts and recycles as much office waste as possible. All sales agents drive hybrid electric vehicles and couriers are done by a carboNZero certified carrier. So for ebode, offsetting our emissions and achieving carboNZero certification was a natural next step for a company that’s constantly striving towards achieving the highest standards of sustainable business and building practices. Our first step was to measure and offset all of the emissions produced with the day to day running of the office as well as any travel associated with running the company. The hardest emission forms to reduce are those associated with travel to clients in places such as Kaikoura and Gisborne, but we are working to reduce these using technologies such as SkypeTM conferencing, online project management tools and internet based information portals for clients and contractors.

It has a growing fleet of over 135 vehicles, including the largest fleet of wheelchair-accessible taxis in the South Island. The bulk of the fleet is owned by self-employed owner-operators who work under the umbrella and control of the company and pay a monthly subscription fee. The company owns around 25% of the fleet, including most of the wheelchair vehicles. First Direct provides taxi transport services for numerous clients in Christchurch including hotels, airlines, health providers, education providers, central and local government, and many other large and small businesses and organisations. The company is a member of the New Zealand Taxi Federation. Since 2007, carbon reduction has been a strong focus for the company and it has launched a number of sustainability initiatives. First Direct was the first Christchurch company to establish a hybrid fleet in 2007 and it has actively encouraged its members to switch to low-emission vehicles. The hybrid fleet currently makes up over 25% of the total car fleet. A maximum CO2 rating of 200 grams per km for all new and replacement cars entering the fleet was recently written into the company's vehicle policy. Education of drivers on environmental issues is an important part of First Direct's sustainability policy. The company has worked with the Sustainable Business Network's Greenfleet Programme on a Sustainable Driving course for small passenger service vehicle drivers that highlights issues around fossil fuel usage and demonstrates ways to reduce fuel consumption. Ongoing education at meetings and in newsletters has also raised awareness of environmental issues considerably in the company. Another initiative to reduce fuel consumption was a review in 2008 that resulted in a reconfiguration of First Direct's GPS dispatch system to change driver behaviour and reduce dead miles for operators travelling to pickup points.

Our offices and warehouse have been fitted with lighting controls that measure daylight, reducing light levels as the natural light levels increase alongside controllers that are occupancy controlled eliminating the need to remember to "Switch Off". We already have these measures in place for our entire base year measurement period. We have based our measurement period from 1 April2008 to 31 March 2009 and have established this as our base year. We have identified that our main emission sources are shipping freight, business vehicles, electricity and air travel. Our annual emission is 54.34t. The main actions we are taking are recycling everything that is possible to recycle, turning off everything possible at night to reduce electricity use, purchasing more energy efficient motor vehicles, making every trip count including asking ourselves is the flight really necessary and creating a sustainable culture within the organisation. We intend to offset any unavoidable emissions by purchasing carbon credits through the carboNZero programme.

Kiwi Does It Limited

Kiwi Does It LtdKiwi Does It Ltd promotes New Zealand through active, adventure-based luxury travel itineraries using the country's top accommodations, events and operators. As we are in the travel industry where flights, vehicles, accommodations and activities are all an everyday necessity, KDI is very dedicated to minimise and offset any emissions. Not only for our promotion but stemming from a real belief that it is either now or never to potentially save our planet. We believe the carboNZero certification will benefit our industry as a whole. Eco-lodges, conscious operators and offsetting flights are just small ways we can help. Our measurement period is 1 February 2009 - 31 January 2010. The main emissions for my home-based business was power and rental vehicles however from February 2010 we moved into a shared office space so our emissions will be slightly different for next year, with the likely addition of fuel and vehicle expenses. In order to reduce these emissions, there are energy-efficient light bulbs installed everywhere, heating and hot water usage is minimised through firewood and turning taps off, washing clothes in cold water etc. In my new office space, again the eco-bulbs are everywhere, appliances are turned off at the wall, lights turned out when away, heat-pump installed, paper and general recycling and waste management is paramount.

Consumers are demanding that companies demonstrate responsibility, and in a global marketplace, New Zealand firms across all industries face a real risk of being left behind unless they show decisiveness in modifying their practices.” As part of attaining carboNZero certification, Lowndes Associates measured all activities causing greenhouse gas emissions and implemented reduction programmes to address the biggest sources of emissions. Lowndes Associates is currently assessing its supply chain and researching environmentally friendly suppliers.

Painters Inc. Limited

Painters Inc Painters Inc. Limited is a medium sized painting and decorating company. Their core business is the interior and exterior preparation and painting of residential and small commercial premises. For exteriors this involves washing down the substrate to remove all dirt and mould and mildew, pulling away rusty nails, scraping and sanding paint and sometimes stripping the paint to bare timber. The substrates then need to be primed and top coated. For interior spaces, walls, ceilings and woodwork is washed or lightly sanded, new gib would be sealed and then top coated. Painting is a highly polluting business activity. There is a lot of waste generated such as sanding discs, maskings, plastic gloves, plastic film and blunt paint scrapers. Cleaning up brushes and rollers can potentially pollute the waterways if not handled correctly. Empty cans with left over paint could be sent to landfill. At Painters Inc. Ltd they recognise that their industry needs to make more effort to limit the damage as much as possible. They are a Resene Eco. Decorator which means they have a commitment to work as sustainably as possible. Painters Inc. Ltd recycle all cans and paint pails and left over paint through the Resene recycling programme and pay the fee up front so customers can take their left over paint to Resene to recycle without incurring any cost. As well as this they try and work as locally as possible to limit ravel/petrol usage. They also wish to implement a recycling programme for all waste in the next year and implement a more technically advanced system for cleaning brushes and rollers which will reduce their impact on the environment.

www.toyota.co.nz

Toyota New Zealand Limited

Toyota logoToyota has led the NZ market for 20 consecutive years; and this success which is underpinned by innovation, product and service quality, and environmental leadership. In 1992 Toyota published its Earth Charter and formally placed the environment as a top management priority. This led to the development of the Prius hybrid petrol-electric car and a range of other ‘green technologies’ which reduce a vehicle’s impact throughout its life cycle – from design and production, through to distribution, driving and eventual disposal. However, Toyota’s environmental efforts go much wider than this to encompass all operational activities, and how to contribute towards a more sustainable society. Measuring, managing and reducing the company’s carbon footprint is therefore a key responsibility. Toyota New Zealand was an early adopter of the carboNZero programme and is the first car company to achieve certification in New Zealand. Offsetting remaining carbon emissions by purchasing verified carbon credits is the final step of Toyota’s Greenhouse Gas emissions reduction strategy, which focuses on improving energy efficiency, reducing business travel, sourcing renewable power, raising staff and supplier awareness, and minimising waste to landfill.

'Transport is a key sector for New Zealand's response to climate change and couriers form a critical part of many supply chains. As the first business in the transport sector to go carbon neutral we wanted to set a standard we hope others will follow,' says MD Steve Bonnici. The way Mr Bonnici sees it, being in a high emissions industry doesn't mean putting it in the too-hard basket because 'not further degrading the environment is really just a licence to operate.' Urgent Couriers' entire operation - including all contractors nationwide - is now carbon neutral. 'Once we had quantified our emissions we focused very much on reducing our footprint within the operations - increasing the number of low emissions vehicles in operation and introducing smart, integrated GPS technology to improve fleet efficiency, before we were ready to offset with credits.'

Wairau River Wines

Wairau river Wines logoWairau River Wines takes its name from the beautiful braided river on whose banks Phil and Chris Rose planted their first vines in 1978. Pioneers in Marlborough, they have just completed their 30th vintage. With five children involved in the business and with five grand children, they have good reason to be looking towards a sustainable future. Phil Rose states that "Working on the land all my life I have always been aware of the environment and am conscious of our impact on it, respect for the environment is paramount in all decisions concerning the winery and vineyards. It is important to our family company to have the least impact possible on our surroundings, ensuring that the wonderful environment we live in is here for future generations to enjoy, allowing us to continue creating world class wines." Lindsay Parkinson - the company General Manager, who managed the process, is adamant that this is a significant step towards future sustainability and becoming carboNzero certified was an easy decision to make. "Managing and reducing our emissions makes us more accountable for our actions and we benefit from a financial perspective as well" he said. Wairau River Wines is in the unique position of controlling all parts of the winemaking process from vine to bottle, it has five estate vineyards in Marlborough totalling 500 acres, and a state-of-the-art winery and bottling facility along with a restaurant and cellar door.

Warren and Mahoney

Warren and Mahoney logoIn 2007 Warren and Mahoney celebrated becoming New Zealand's first architecture and interior design practice to achieve carboNZero certification. It was a natural step for Warren and Mahoney. For the past six years the national architecture practice, with offices in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Queenstown, has been steadily incorporating sustainability into its business. Warren and Mahoney pioneered an environmental protocol to encourage its clients to adopt more environmentally responsible designs. The practice has also engaged with several environmental pilot schemes and was an establishment partner of GreenBuild, a national building products database. Sustainable design forms the basis of much of Warren and Mahoney's recent work; it was an advisor to New Zealand's first two five-star Green Star rated buildings - Meridian Energy's new premises in Wellington and 80 Queen Street in Auckland. Also, Warren and Mahoney director Graeme Finlay is deputy chairman of the New Zealand Green Building Council. Becoming carbon neutral assures clients that the practice is committed to sustainability right to its core, as well as in the designs it develops for them. For Warren and Mahoney being carbon neutral has been the result of a series of small steps, from switching off lights and computers when not using them, introducing recycling and purchasing policies, and encouraging video conferencing in place of air travel, to envisaging a fleet of fuel-efficient cars. Moreover, the Christchurch office has retrofitted an efficient lighting system linked to daylight sensors and made the shift from diesel to bio-diesel to reduce carbon emissions from its heating systems. In the short term Warren and Mahoney is mitigating its carbon emissions by buying carbon credits. It's investing in a local scheme to regenerate native forest on retired farmland.

Worldwide Fund for Nature New Zealand (WWF-NZ)

WWF NZ logoWWF-New Zealand is the local office of the WWF International Network, the world’s largest and most experienced independent conservation organisation. WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future where people live in harmony with nature. WWF-New Zealand campaigns for healthy oceans now and in the future, inspires action on climate change through its Earth Hour campaign, protects New Zealand’s endangered Hector’s dolphins, and partners with local volunteer conservation groups to restore native habitats across the country. Although WWF-NZ is a small office based charity, we recognise that, like any other organisation, we have a responsibility to monitor and understand our contribution to climate change – our greenhouse gas emissions – and take steps to reduce our impact. WWF-NZ is committed to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations by 51%.between 2010 and 2020. This is commensurate with what the country as a whole needs to achieve if New Zealand is to play a fair role in avoiding runaway climate change. WWF-NZ will buy carbon credits to offset its remaining emissions.
