The school calculator helps teachers and students estimate the amount of greenhouse gases their school releases into the atmosphere. Using the tips suggested as a guide, you can develop an emissions reduction plan for the school. Then you can see how effective you are at reducing the emissions.
To calculate your emissions, gather the information you need (electricity, gas, coal, transport use, waste generation etc) and simply enter the appropriate values in the list. This can be done monthly or annually.
You could calculate your school's emissions monthly, and graph progress throughout the year. Remember the emissions will be affected by holidays and seasons, as well as by changes in people’s behaviour and activities.
Once all your data is entered, you can generate and emissions report which indicates where you can make the most savings. The next step is to develop an emissions reduction plan to reduce the school’s emissions. The plan could be an ongoing campaign with posters and incentives aimed at students, staff, and the Board of Trustees. It is an opportunity to get creative!
Come back to the calculator at a later date and reassess your emissions. This way you’ll be able to see if you have reduced your emissions.
