EECA 2009 Awards - Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Energy Award

The 2009 EECA Awards were held on May 21st at Sky City in Auckland. The prestigious event celebrated businesses and individuals who have achieved great things in energy efficiency or renewable energy projects. The Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Energy Award recognises a person who has influenced or contributed to the implementation of sustainable energy practices consistently for over 10 years.

Professor Ann Smith, the GM - Technical for the carboNZero programme was selected as the joint winner, along with Professor C. Gerry Carrington from the University of Otago, for the Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Energy Award.

The Judges said that Professor Ann Smith is at the forefront of the carboNZero programme - a living programme that is making a big difference to New Zealand businesses and setting a standard on the international stage for best practice.

Not only has Professor Smith been instrumental in the development of the carboNZero concept, she was also closely involved in developing the Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme (CEMARS). This has wider implications for New Zealand businesses and our economy, and is a win-win for those organisation involved in the export economy that benefit from energy efficiency initiatives and address the issues of 'food miles' and 'passenger miles'.

The judges believed that part of New Zealand's economic differentiation in the future will be based on renewable energy and carbon footprint, and the carboNZero programme has a significant role to play in helping to achieve this.

It was also very pleasing to see a large number of carboNZero and CEMARS clients achieve recognition at the EECA awards demonstrating that participation in the programme assists and facilitates businesses with innovative and outstanding results in energy efficiency. In particular, we would like to congratulate the outstanding efforts by Energy for Industry and Yealands Estate Wines, who collectively were acknowledge in six categories. Well done!
