carboNZero certification is awarded only after independent verification of the measure, manage and mitigate steps by authorised verifiers. The use of the carboNZero certification marks is also examined during verification.
- Our authorised verifiers are employed by reputable firms, have auditing qualifications and prior experience and proficiency in greenhouse gas emissions measurement, management and mitigation.
- To be authorised, verifiers must complete the carboNZero programme training course, pass an examination and be observed undertaking a verification.
AsureQuality
AsureQuality is a commercial company 100 percent owned by the New Zealand Government. We provide food safety and biosecurity services to the food and primary production sectors. Every day our team of 1700 experts, based at 140 locations throughout Australasia, works alongside customers in over 40 countries worldwide, to assure the safety and quality of food being produced for millions of people. As well as holding approval to audit clients seeking carboNZero certification, we are accredited to ISO Guide 62, 65, 66, 17020, 17025 and IFOAM and certify to BRC and EUREPGAP standards, among others. These accreditations support government-to-government assurances and international market access requirements. As an approved auditor AsureQuality carries out independent third-party audits on behalf of Landcare Research for organisations wanting to demonstrate that they meet the criteria set out by the carboNZero programme. We also provide biosecurity surveillance and response services to assist MAF Biosecurity New Zealand protect against exotic pest and disease incursions; and develop, manufacture and internationally distribute animal health diagnostic products.

In 2007, Deloitte conducted the carboNZero verification audit for Meridian Energy Limited, a first for the energy sector in New Zealand, and in 2008, our team performed the verification for Westpac’s certification under the Emissions Measurement And Reduction Scheme (CEMARS), a global first for a financial institution. We also perform a number of verifications in the wine sector, travel and tourism sectors, government entities, events and information systems industries. We have worked closely with Landcare Research in the development of their processes and methodology for verification, including the ISO certification process.
Our national team of nine specialists are based in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin and are experienced carbon accountants and carbon inventory auditors. They combine the best of professional assurance expertise with environmental engineering, sustainable strategy expertise, environment health and safety auditing.
We are actively involved in the World and New Zealand Business Councils for Sustainable Development and have worked with the New Zealand government in an advisory capacity on the ETS and central government carbon measurement schemes. Since 1984, when it was among the first to audit and certify management systems to ISO 9000 standards worldwide, Telarc SAI has remained the major systems certification body in New Zealand.
